About the Item

A very fine and important pair of heavy Irish silver sauce boats of typical form. The body heavily embossed and chased with floral and foliage designs. With leaf capped flying C-scroll handle and gadrooned rim. The whole standing on three shell capped hoof feet. The front of the body inscribed with an armorial in a shaped cartouche depicting a motto in Gaelic above a symbol of the Sun surmounting a crown. The motto reads loisgim agus soilleirighim which roughly translates as "the sun in his glory." Both marked to the underside for Dublin 1772 by Richard Williams. These sauce boats are unusual in so far as they are of exceptionally large size and weight. The decoration is very typical of the late 18th century for Irish pieces and the workmanship is of the very highest order. In absolutely original condition with no signs of any damage apart from very minor surface wear appropriate for their age. The front hoof on one of the boats is very slightly raised although both of them Stand absolutely even. Wonderful colour and patina.
