19th Century Superb Victorian 57 Piece Fish and Dessert Canteen Cutlery

About the Item

This is a fantastic 57-piece canteen of silver plated cutlery bearing the hallmarks of the renowned silversmiths S. Roberts & Co and William Bateman with silver hallmarks for 1889 and 1890. The fitted mahogany cabinet has a lift up lid with two drawers beneath and is complete with the original lock and key. The fish set features decoative shaped handles and hallmarked sterling silver collars with engraved silver plated tines and blades while the dessert service has mother-of-pearl handles with hallmaked sterling silver collars and engraved blades and tines. The complete set comprises: 12 fish forks 12 fish knives 12 dessert forks 12 dessert knives Two Berry Spoons Two pairs of nutcrackers Two Nut picks One Sugar spoon One Sugar sifting spoon One pair grape scissors This is a fabulous set which will gracefully adorn any table. Dimensions in cm: Height 20.5 x width 47 x depth 34 Dimensions in inches: Height 8.1 x width 18.5 x depth 13.4 Mahogany is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species. Mahogany has been used for centuries in shipbuilding, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th-century vanity box, dressing case or jewellery box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as Rosewood, Kingwood, Burr Walnut and Coromandel, so that the actual mahogany was almost hidden from view. Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Although mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘Flame’ mahogany and ‘Fiddleback’ mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments). Cuban mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850s, this particular variety became all but extinct.

This is a fine quality antique silver-plated Victorian centrepiece bearing the makers stamp to the underside of the renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Son, of Sheffield, London, Birmingham & Chester, Circa 1890 in date. This wonderful centerpiece was made with a central vase for flowers and a dishe either side, each can be removed when required, to house sweetsd, fruit, nuts, etc A lot of intricate detailing has gone into the creation of this beautiful item. This is an extremely well designed and attractive piece that can only grow in value. Condition: In excellent condition with clear makers marks and no dings, dents or signs of repair. The first mark was entered by the firm in Sheffield Assay Office on 31 January 1878. It was a "JD" over "WD" and, possibly, represented the partnership of James Deakin and his son William Pitchford Deakin. The firm was active at Sidney Works, Matilda Street, Sheffield. In 1886 two further sons entered in the partnership, John Deakin and Albert Deakin, and the firm was then known as James Deakin & Sons. Further marks were entered in London Assay Office (1888) by William and John Deakin (subsidiary offices and showrooms at 48 Holborn Viaduct, London), Chester and Birmingham. Further offices and showrooms were opened at Gardiner House, 14 Charterhouse Street, London, 34 St. Enoch Square, Glasgow and 7 Queen Street, Belfast. After the retirement of James Deakin (1893) the business was continued by his sons William, John and Albert.
