About the Item
I am offering for sale a small bowl with a stand equipped with a handle, perfect as it has rarely been seen on an antique chest of drawers or on a dressing table, or as a precious soap holder... but I can also imagine it as a gravy boat or salt shaker on a well-set table.
This item is made of silver-plated brass, the carving and chiseling work done on the scales and expression of the triton fish is splendid.
This type of depiction of grotesque fish is often attributed by iconography to the desire to depict tritons or even dolphins, in reality it is one of the many imaginary animals such as sea monsters and sphinxes brought back in vogue by Raphael in 1400, following the recovery of evidence of ancient Roman art, first of all the decoration of the Domus Aurea and called "Grotesque" decoration.
This is a decorative technique widely spread during the Italian Renaissance which mixed hybrid and monstrous beings, chimeras with geometric and naturalistic decorations.
The shell-shaped bowl has a comfortable handle for moving it, also in silver plated, it shows signs of use and age inside which have removed the silver plating in some parts.
Stable, solid and with a mysterious charm, it is ready to be placed wherever you want in your home.
