About the Item

Anton Michelsen Sterling Silver Gilt Christmas Spoon, The artist Lars Åkirke is the Designer, 1979 The 1979 Anton Michelsen Christmas Spoon is gilded sterling silver with an enamel handle. It was designed by the artist Lars Åkirke. The handle depicts three green fir trees below a glowing sun with an orange enamel glaze that covers the background. Below is a shaped blue form, maybe depicting mother earth sustaining the trees. . Dimensions: 6 1/2 inches long x 1 1/2 inches wide x 3/4 inches high Lars Gunner Åkirke (20 March 1926 – Gørlev20 August 2004 in Tibirke) was a Danish painter and graphic artist. In 1948 he changed his last name from Larsen to Aakirke, and later changed the writing to Åkirke. He married the artist Vibeke Alfelt in 1953. The couple are buried at Tibirke Cemetery. The concept of a spoon being a work of art is clearly seen in the spoon’s production. A. Michelsen has documented that it takes 38 different hand operations to create a single spoon. Each spoon must be cut with special cutting tools.sawed and drilled by hand, then filed and polished before enameling. Each spoon is enameled and baked three separate times before being gilded and buffed to a high polish. Reference: Anton Michelsen, a renowned Danish silversmith, established his workshop, A. Michelsen, in 1841. His company became the official court jeweler for the Danish monarchy in 1848, producing high-quality silver objects and jewelry. One of A. Michelsen’s most notable traditions was the creation of annual enameled Christmas spoons, which began in 1910. These spoons were crafted with intricate designs and fine enameling, often featuring contributions from respected silversmiths and designers. Over the decades, the Christmas spoons became highly collectible, reflecting both Danish craftsmanship and evolving artistic styles. In 1968, Royal Copenhagen acquired the Michelsen factory, continuing the tradition of producing collectible spoons and forks under the Michelsen name. Today, these spoons remain sought-after items among collectors, celebrated for their artistry and historical significance. Of all of A. Michelsen’s works, perhaps the best remembered and most certainly the most collected was its line of Christmas spoons. The concept of collecting Christmas plates and spoons was born in Denmark when Bing & Grondahl offered its first Christmas plate in 1895 followed by Royal Copenhagen’s first Christmas plate in 1908. Finally, in 1910 A. Michelsen offered the world its first Christmas spoon and fork. By 1910, Michelsen had a fine history of making commemorative spoons, so when it released its first Christmas spoon, it did not mark the spoon with the year “1910” on it. In fact, A. Michelsen did not intend to produce a line of Christmas spoons, but rather it produced a one-off Christmas spoon in 1910 that proved so popular the company decided to issue a new Christmas spoon every year in the years ahead, marking each of the successive spoons with the year it was manufactured. From 1910 until 1967, A. Michelsen continued producing and offering for sale Christmas spoons for all the years the spoons had been designed; however, in 1968, this stopped. 1968 marked the year that all of the past year’s Christmas spoon dies were destroyed, and a decision was made to cast only that year’s, 1968, Christmas spoon. This decision to limit the production of its Christmas spoons truly marked Michelsen Christmas spoons as collector items since they were now offered in limited edition only. (Ref: NY10815-klxx)

It was designed the artist Poul Hanmann. The shaped handle depicts a red enamel rose growing up in the blue sky from a snow covered ground. The artist chose this design as a familiar Christmas design in Denmark. Dimensions: 6 1/2 inches long x 1 1/2 inches wide x 3/4 inches high. Poul Frederik Hanmann was a Danish painter born on September 20, 1915, in Copenhagen. He studied at P. Rostrup Bøyesen's painting school from 1945 to 1950, which greatly influenced his artistic style. Hanmann was known for his figure paintings, particularly of female nude models, which he depicted with a balanced and simplified composition. Over time, his work became more abstract, with fewer details, creating an ethereal quality in his paintings.
