About the Item
Exquisite Austrian Art-Nouveau Tabatière and Matchbox, Around 1900:
Rectangular silver cigarette case in a smooth finish, curved, with hinged lid, coloured enamel painting on the top with embedded silver decoration: portrait of an Art Nouveau beauty as a semi-nude with flowing long hair and headdress, hand mirror in one hand and smoking cigarette in the other, with a forest of tobacco plants in the background. The image is framed and broken up by inlaid, plant-like intertwined silver bars, a typical Art Nouveau motif. Opens with a pressure closure on the side, eyelets on the inside with attached original retaining straps, remnants of interior gilding.
Matching matchbox with identical image motif, hinged on the side and opening upwards, side eyelet for attachment to a chain, recessed groove with roughened surface at the bottom for striking the match.
In an old, lined case, not original!

- Diana head in hexagon - Viennese official hallmark 1872 - 1922 for 900 silver
- 'J.R' - Master's sign of JOHANN ROTHBAUER: Authorization 1887, Gold and silversmith
