A Brass and Silver Crypto Judaica Compendium by Dudik Swed, Jerusalem 1986
About the Item
A masterwork of ceremonial artistry and sculptural ingenuity, this extraordinary multi-piece Judaica compendium by Dudik Swed is a rare and exceptional creation, meticulously designed and crafted to unify nine distinct ritual objects and a personal family heirloom into a single, cohesive form. Numbered 6 of only 42 pieces made, this limited-edition ensemble merges spiritual tradition with refined decorative sensibility, fashioned from polished brass and richly adorned with sculpted sterling silver foliate motifs.
Designed in the elegant shape of a tall, stylized pitcher, the entire form is harmoniously covered with silver-chased vines and cascading leaves, flowing organically from the domed lid down through the spout, handle, and base. Each sculptural detail—leaf, stem, and blossom—is masterfully rendered, providing a visual language that weaves together all elements into one symbolically resonant vessel.
Concealed within this magnificent form are eight essential ritual objects of Jewish tradition, each ingeniously integrated and ornamented with matching foliate and floral decoration:
A Hanukkah Oil Lamp is housed in the hinged base of the vessel, which opens gracefully to reveal a recessed lamp bowl, lined with delicately modeled rose and leaf motifs. Within the scrolling design is the inscription: "הנרות הללו קודש הם" (These lights are sacred), subtly embedded among the curling vines.
The lower pitcher section doubles as an Etrog container, whose latches open to reveal a pair of Shabbat candlesticks, their stems designed as naturalistic plant stalks, tapering upward to flower-like holders that cradle candle cups in place of blossoms.
Nestled alongside is a Passover seder plate set, comprising circular dishes embossed with the names of each traditional food item, each framed in the same foliate silverwork that decorates the surrounding surfaces.
The lower portion of the Etrog container also serves as a Kiddush goblet, its interior smooth and polished, while its exterior continues the flowing vine motif in elegant relief.
Moving upward, the upper pitcher section is formed from several layered components:
A Havdalah spice container is cleverly disguised within the bell-shaped top, pierced with small openings at the sides and filled with floral embossments inside.
The spice container’s removable domed lid doubles as a Dreidel, whose base is adorned with the Hebrew letters נ, ג, ה, ש surrounded by leafy tendrils, seamlessly merging play with ritual.
Built into the spout is a concealed Yahrzeit lamp, accessed by a hinged cover. Inside, on the sculpted silver petal of an internal blossom, is etched the phrase "נר ה' נשמת אדם" (The soul of man is the light of God).
The upper central section features a stylish latched auriform handle, initially suggesting a hidden Megillat Esther scroll. However, when opened, it reveals a personalized family tree inscribed on parchment, beautifully painted at the top, and filled with names and relationships in neatly penned Hebrew script—a deeply intimate heirloom embedded within a ritual object. The top section bears the inscriptions "ארור המן" (Cursed be Haman) and "ברוך מרדכי" (Blessed be Mordechai), further connecting it thematically to Purim.
Each of the component parts can be removed, used, and returned to their original positions within the form, allowing the object to serve both as ritual toolkit and sculptural centerpiece.
A rare and highly imaginative fusion of Judaica, sculpture, and spiritual symbolism, this work by Dudik Swed, numbered 6 out of only 42 made, it is a remarkable collector’s item and exemplifies modern ritual art at its finest—both functional and poetic, blending material opulence with heartfelt tradition. A true collector’s treasure and heirloom-worthy piece of ceremonial artistry.
