About the Item
Enamelled Jack Russel - approximately 47 grams Weight
From our Silver collection, we are delighted to offer this Dog Kennel Silver and Enamel Vesta Case. The Silver and Enamel Vesta Case of Novelty shape modelled as a Dog Kennel in Sterling Silver with an enamel domed plaque to the front painted with a Jack Russel imitating the dog sat in the kennel. The Dog kennel hinges at the peaked roof allowing access to the hollow centre for storing matches. To one side of the kennel a ribbed section allows the user to strike the match. The Silver and Enamel vesta case is hallmarked Sterling Silver, London by George Heath and is dated 1891 during the Victorian Era. A fantastic and collectable novelty silver piece.
George Heath worked as a London silversmith from the second half of the 19th century until the first quarter of the 20th century. Known particularly for Silver Boxes, cigar cases and vesta cases.
Vesta Case is a small box that houses matches (strike anywhere matches). In England the containers took their name from the term Newton used for his invention, and they became known as “vesta cases”, “vesta boxes” or simply “vestas”. In America the more original term “match safes” was used.
Sterling Silver is an alloy composed by weight of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness (parts per thousand) of 925.
Enamel (vitreous enamel) also known as porcelain enamel, is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 °C. The powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating. The word vitreous comes from the Latin vitreous, meaning “glassy”.
Victorian an era of the United Kingdom and its overseas Empire which spanned through the 63-year reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).
