About the Item

German Silver commemorative beaker belonging to a named veteran of the Garde-Volontar-Kosak. An interesting variant of the Munzbecher (coin beaker) style drinking cup or pokal. The Garde-Volontar-Kosak was a squadron of volunteers (exempt from military service before 9 February 1813), equipped at their own cost, attached to the Regiment Garde du Corps. In 1814, after the campaign, the unit was dissolved. Features engraving to "Carl Wilhelm Ferdinand Woderb*" (1794-1871) later an influential Berlin iron foundry founder with Franz Anton Egells (see Der Preussische Eisenkunstguss : Technik - Geschichte - Werke - Künstler by Eva Schmidt). Upper part of cup is engraved with two line dedicatory phrase, around the base is the volunteer's information reading: 3 Febr 1813 Carl Wilh Ferd Woderb Garde-Voluntar-Kosak Front face of the cup is an 1816-1822 Prussian Ein Taler coin (single side; reverse/interior side ground off) mounted in a repousse worked wreath, bearing the legend Friedr. Wilhelm III Koenig Von Preussen and featuring a profile view of the young king. On the back of the cup is mounted a Napoleonic war service medal (double sided, dated 1813/1814). It features a the royal insignia of a crown over FW and legend reading Preussens Tapfern Kriegren (Prussia's brave warriors). Surrounding on the edge is a motto reading Gott war mit uns, Ihm sei die Ehre ( God was with us, to Him be the glory). These medals were reportedly fashioned from captured and melted down French armaments. The war service medal is mounted in repousse worked garland of oak leaves with the names of various battles engraved thereon. Names on the leaves include: Hayanu, Leipzig, Bautzen, GrossGorschen (engraved upon 2 leaves), La Rothiere, Paris, Arcis Sur Aube (engraved upon 2 leaves)**. The banner below bears the date 17 March 1813, the date of the Prussian declaration of war on France. Trace gilt interior.
