About the Item
This magnificent Italian silver Passover Seder plate, crafted in Venice circa 1800, is a striking example of refined silversmith artistry combined with deep ritual significance. Made entirely of finely worked silver, the plate features a broad, circular form with a subtly scalloped edge and rests on a flat base, designed to hold the symbolic foods of the Passover Seder.
The central field is elaborately decorated with a radiating repousse design of overlapping scales and interlaced petals, forming a richly textured medallion. At its heart sits a smooth, polished boss encircled by a dotted border and flanked by almond-shaped cartouches attached to tied-off bows at the bottom and acorn finials sprouting from rosettes, all symmetrically arranged and connected by beautiful latticework around the central rosette
Surrounding the inner well is a gracefully sloped rim that gently ascends to a wide, ornate border. This border is exquisitely adorned with alternating repoussé scrollwork, foliate motifs, and harmonious latticework, all enriched with six almond-shaped medallions—likely alluding to the six traditional Seder items, with beadwork around the outer edge. Each section is flanked by stylized acanthus leaves and volute designs that echo the opulence of early 19th-century Italian decorative taste.
The craftsmanship demonstrates a masterful blend of Baroque and Neoclassical aesthetics, typical of Venetian silverwork of the period, while the form and symbolism speak directly to the Jewish ritual function of the piece. Seder plates from this era and origin are exceedingly rare and highly sought after, treasured both for their artistic beauty and for their role in one of Judaism’s most important and beloved ceremonies.
Hallmarked on the central boss.
