About the Item

Two elegant, plain silver candle holders on a round stand, foot laterally profiled, centred raised smooth shaft, in the lower third constriction by profiled bead ring, shaft widening conically upwards, with vase-shaped spout placed on top. Monogram with five-pointed crown of nobility on foot. Re-hallmarking and free stamp: The French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars plunged the Austrian state into financial difficulties. In order to alleviate these problems, a decree was issued ordering the re-stamping of all existing gold and silver items (including those in private ownership), for which a very high fee was charged at the time. The re-stamping was carried out between 1 September 1806 and 31 July 1807. For the same reason as stated above, the state was forced to issue a ‘silver delivery patent’ (not for gold) barely three years after the re-hallmarking decree, which ordered the confiscation of all silver utensils in the possession of private individuals, corporations and the church, and their delivery and melting down. The only way to avoid delivery was to be able to pay the full value of the silver object in terms of conventional currency, i.e. not in banknotes. The pieces were marked with a so-called ‘free stamp’. Great works of art, expensive monuments of art history, magnificent church and monastery silverware disappeared forever in the melting pot. This sacrifice was in vain, as the financial crisis could not be stopped. These silver requirements are the reason why so little Antique Vienna silverware from the Renaissance, Baroque and Louis XVI periods is available today. 13 lot silver Dimensions: Height: 21,0 cm / 8.26 in Diameter: 9,7 cm / 3.81 in Total weight: 499 grams / 16.04 troy oz Branded by the wheel mark, Austria-Hungarian official hallmark for Vienna 1791-1806, 13 Lot silver, dating 1804 Master's mark 'KG' in rectangle Crescent + ‘D’ framed with indented sides, Re-hallmarking stamp 1806/1807,Crescent: ancient for silver, ‘D’: for city of Lviv ‘FR’ in ligature in square, Free stamp 1809/1810 Bibliography: Viktor Reitzner, Alt Wien, Encyclopaedia of Austrian and South German Art and Arts and Crafts, Precious Metals and their hallmarks, self-published Vienna, 1952, page 194, P 119, pages 204 and 205.
