Pair of Stately Silver Terrines by Mayerhofer & Klinkosch, Vienna, 1846

About the Item

Two silver lidded terrines with a metal insert in a baroque style. Round basic shape, slightly bulbous body with incorporated ridges and curved areas. Ornate handles are attached to both sides. The top edge of both the bowl and the lid, as well as the insert bowl are made to fit. The lid continues the design of the bowl and is crowned by a stylized, ring-shaped retaining knob. The body and top of both terrines are decorated with the coat of arms of Prince George Bibesco, ruler of the Principality of Wallachia from 1843 to 1848. Very elaborate old workmanship of the Viennese imperial royal purveyors Mayerhofer & Klinkosch. Branded by the Wheel mark, Austrian official hallmark: 13 Lot silver, dating 1846 Manufactory stamp: 'M & K' - for Mayerhofer & Klinkosch Founded in 1830 by Stephan Mayerhofer and Carl Klinkosch: 'K. k. Court and state priv. Gold, silver u. Plating manufacturers'. The Mayerhofer & Klinkosch silver workshop had developed into one of the most successful companies in the industry by 1850. In 1869 Josef Carl Klinkosch became the sole owner and the successor company 'Gold-, Silber- und Metallwaren-Fabrik J. C. Klinkosch' was established.
