About the Item

A striking sterling silver-gilt stirrup cup by the Royal Irish Silver Co., hallmarked Dublin, 1972. The upper section is finely modelled as the head of a snarling wolf, rendered with exceptional detail in textured sterling silver. The interior is richly gilt, providing a luxurious contrast and a traditional touch associated with ceremonial drinking vessels. This sculptural piece follows the tradition of stirrup cups — typically given to riders before a hunt — and is designed to be held inverted when not in use, resting on the animal's head. Specifications: Maker: Royal Irish Silver Co. Date: 1972 Assay: Dublin, Ireland Material: Sterling silver, gilt interior Weight: 304 grams Dimensions: Height: 11.5 cm Diameter (rim): 6.5 cm Hallmarks: Fully hallmarked to the body with Irish sterling standard marks, date letter , 1972, and maker’s mark RI for Royal Irish Silver Co. Condition Report: Very good vintage condition with minor surface wear consistent with age.
