About the Item

Silver chest. Basque country, 17th century, 1617. With inscription. Rectangular base and semi-circular lid slightly raised on four legs with vegetal shape finished in hooves (and placed on a ball), decorated to the outside with a careful composition based on vegetal forms and simplified scrolls, with strong symmetry, capped the lid with a decorative element of clean forms. To the front, it closes with a piece in the same material, attached to the chest with a chain; on the back, has hinges decorated with a railing and two balls reminiscent of decorative elements very employed in the Spanish escurialense renaissance. The base presents a legend: "S. Bartholome El Real de Calegoen. Year of 1617 ". It is not frequent to keep a piece with a inscription so detailed as to its date of invoice and its membership, although it is more common to keep this type of work in liturgical settings (as part of a treasure) than in civilians (in the which were replaced by boxes more suited to later tastes). The parish church of San Bartolomé el Real de Calegoen (Elgoibar) was born in 1617: scholars have found a document of the 17th century in the factory book of 1693-1764, and it is assumed that the church would already be built in 1623 and is assumed which would work in 1629, and finally opened in 1716. This building, which is the present one, was the work of the architects Longa, Larraza and Ibero, and is notable for its Escorial influence, in addition to its baroque style. The chest also shows that memory of the Renaissance and certain touches that can be found in works related to the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Madrid and the style that emerged thanks to the construction of it. Nevertheless, the top auction and the legs of the piece are closer to the movement and taste of the Spanish Baroque of the XVII century. As for form, it responds to a long tradition of which some medieval examples have also been preserved. Weight: 540 grams." Size: 19 x 10 x 11 cms.

Mid 17th Century Dutch Engraved Silver Wedding Casket or knottekist, Circa 1660

A museum-grade mid-17th century Dutch silver marriage casket or knottekistje, circa 1660. Raised on solid silver bun feet the miniature casket is profusely engraved to all faces depicting a courting couple and architecture entwined in scrolling foliage. The reverse of the casket depicts the last supper, however, if you look closely, you can see a boy stealing food or wine from underneath! Possibly, this is the courting gentleman showing that he had a sense of humour. The scratch lined moulded top is surmounted with an intricate handle (once gilt) and floral patera to the centre. There are two inscriptions each within a cartouche 'In Lÿfde Beltact het al' and 'Getrouw tot in den doot' which loosely translates to 'faithful until the death' and 'love is everything'. French Medieval Style Silver Jewelry Box, circa 1880
Located in Miami, FL
A remarkable intricately designed, handcrafted silver box, circa 1880s. We were told that this box is sterling silver and that the makers mark "M" is that of "M. Mayer". Maurice MAYER was a very prestigious silversmith. Research shows that he was an "Orfèvre de l'Empereur", Napoleon Bonaparte, 1860-1870. The Minerva hallmarks are not visible, may have been rubbed off from use and cleaning. No documentation. This intricately carved box depicts the romantic poem of Le Roman de la Rose (The Romance of the Rose). Comes with the original lock and key. Le Roman de la Rose, begun by Guillaume de Lorris circa 1230 and completed, in a different style, circa 1270-1280, by Jean de Meun, builds on the concept of courtly love found in the poetry of the troubadours. The authors create a complex allegory of the romance between the Lover and the Rose. In the quest to pick the Rose (to achieve the conquest of love), the flower and its attendants represent the Lady and her sentiments while being wooed. In the first part of the poem, written by de Lorris, the Lover recounts his dream, ending with the winning of a kiss from the Lady. In the dream, the Lover discovers a walled garden and gains entrance thanks to a beautiful young woman. He meets Diversion and dancers who represent courtly values such as Beauty and Generosity. A tour of the garden brings him to a beautiful bed of roses by the Fountain of Love...
