About the Item
This remarkable Dutch silver etrog box, crafted in the Netherlands around 1900, is a magnificent example of refined Judaica merged with dramatic narrative artistry. Oval in shape with a generous, rounded form, the box is a stunning blend of late 19th-century Rococo revival ornamentation and deeply evocative biblical imagery.
The lower body of the container is richly decorated with boldly embossed seashell motifs at either side, each shell seamlessly connected by flowing, sinuous vines that intertwine with gracefully scrolling acanthus leaves—hallmarks of the Rococo aesthetic. These ornate elements are masterfully chased against a finely stippled, hammered background, which adds both depth and texture, enhancing the relief-like quality of the design. Beneath this, a neatly chased row of budding floral motifs encircles the lower edge, completing the lower section with elegance and symmetry.
The hinged lid of the etrog box elevates its visual and symbolic richness even further. Around its lower edge, the border of downward-facing floral buds echoes the motif below, visually tying the two halves together. Above, the lid rises in an undulating, almost crown-like profile that frames a grand central cartouche in high repoussé.
Within this central panel unfolds a dramatic and beautifully detailed biblical scene—Moses at the parting of the Red Sea. Dressed in long, flowing robes reminiscent of 19th-century biblical imaginings, Moses stands with his staff outstretched heavenward, his posture commanding and triumphant as clouds gather above him, evoking divine presence. Below him, the Egyptian army is depicted mid-defeat, with horses, chariots, and armed soldiers enveloped by curling waves, their finery and banners caught in the chaos of the sea’s collapse.
Behind Moses, the liberated Israelites are portrayed in a variety of expressive and deeply human vignettes: a mother embracing her child, a musician playing an instrument, another figure gathering belongings, and several individuals in poses of praise, wonder, and joy, their faces radiating a profound sense of salvation and celebration.
Rendered with astonishing craftsmanship and emotive power, this etrog box is both a functional ritual object and a narrative sculpture—celebrating not only the mitzvah of the etrog but also the enduring story of redemption and divine deliverance. A true treasure of Dutch Judaica.
Hallmarked at the bottom of the container and inside the lip of the lid.
