A Silver Gilt Engraved Bowl and Matching Cover, Augsburg circa 1700

About the Item

A superb example of late 17th to early 18th-century German silverwork, this magnificent silver-gilt covered bowl was crafted in Augsburg circa 1700 by the accomplished silversmith Johann Wagner. Richly adorned and exquisitely engraved, the piece exemplifies the opulence and technical mastery associated with Augsburg’s golden age of decorative arts. The domed cover is a celebration of Baroque ornamentation, featuring a series of flowing floral wreaths, interwoven with a variety of fruits—symbolizing abundance and prosperity—framed by elegant acanthus leaves and gently cascading ribbons at either end. At the top, a central handle is mounted, flanked by two rail-form attachments, allowing for easy lifting and functional grace. The lower bowl is equally impressive, with three masterfully engraved cartouches, each depicting a distinct and idyllic European landscape from the period—scenes that evoke the romantic imagination of the “Old World.” Each vignette is framed by lavish repoussé acanthus foliage, creating a harmonious interplay between natural beauty and formal ornamentation. The bowl rests on four solid ball feet, giving it both elevation and stately presence. Two finely C-scrolled handles, edge-pierced and elegantly curved, extend from either side, balancing the vessel’s rounded proportions and adding an air of refinement. Featured on the outside of the four sides of the tefillin covers are beautiful chased motifs of grape clusters on hanging vines, pomegranates growing on trees, palm trees with hanging date clusters, and fig bushes with figs sprouting from their branches. These four species of fruit are part of the seven species...
