A Silver and Glass Italian Amulet, Rare Judaica from Italy 17-18th Century
About the Item
This rare and evocative Judaica artifact hails from Italy and dates to the 17th–18th century, embodying a refined blend of spiritual symbolism and exquisite craftsmanship. Octagonal in form, the amulet is uniquely constructed with a jagged silver casing and bordered by an elegant wire-like filigree—highlighting the fine Italian metalwork traditions of the period.
At the heart of the amulet lies a carefully faceted glass panel, cut with the brilliance one might expect from a gemstone. Beneath the glass, the sacred name of God, שדי (Shaddai), is delicately hand-painted in Hebrew script, encircled by other mystical, Kabbalistic inscriptions. The central divine name is framed in gold paint, set against a rich blue background, evoking both beauty and reverence.
The reverse of the amulet also bears an engraving of שדי, further reinforcing its role as a protective object of deep spiritual intent. The entire piece is encased in silver, with a loop affixed at the top—allowing it to be worn close to the body, as a pendant, in the traditional manner of amulets.
Combining religious significance, artistic excellence, and historical rarity, this Italian silver and glass amulet is a remarkable testament to the mystical heritage of European Jewish communities during the early modern
