About the Item

This traditional silver Kavkaz belt from early 20th century Russia featuring a niello design is a highly valuable and culturally significant piece. The Kavkaz region, encompassing the Caucasus area, has a rich history of intricate metalwork and niello art. The Caucasus region, including parts of Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, is known for its diverse cultural heritage and skilled artisans. Traditional jewelry and accessories from this area often feature elaborate designs and advanced metalworking techniques with influences from Russian and European art movements. The belt is made of silver with leather straps connecting the main part of the buckle to the stylish links which are connected to a series of five larger links that wrap around the waist of the traditional garments. Striking niello foliate motifs adorn the surface of the links and buckle providing a beautiful contrast against the silver. Multiple dome-like structures similar to the architectural structures of that period framed by beaded scrolling patterns are attached to the front of the buckle to add to the splendor of the belt. The niello work enhances these designs, highlighting the skill of the artisan and the cultural significance of the patterns. The name of the person the belt belonged to "Shimon Ben David" is inscribed in Hebrew in a similar niello on the inner part of the buckle clasp. Such belts were not only functional accessories but also status symbols, reflecting the wearer's wealth and cultural identity. They were often worn during special occasions, ceremonies, or as part of traditional dress. This silver Kavkaz belt represents the high level of craftsmanship and artistic heritage of the Caucasus region. Hallmarked on the inner part of the belt buckle where it connects to the leather straps.
