About the Item

Silver tray, presented by the members of the 'Menachem Aveilim' society to Rabbi Yosef Weisse, 1858. Silver tray with Hebrew inscription dated 1858 presented by the members of the 'Menachem Aveilim' society of the Waag-Neustadtl community to their Rabbi Yosef Weisse. Rabbi Yosef Weisse was born in Plumenau in 1812. He attended Rabbi David Buchheim's Talmud school in Kojetein. In Prague, he completed a pedagogical and academic degree together with Moritz Steinschneider and Rabbi Leopold Löw . In 1837 Weisse became a teacher at the community school in Prossnitz , and in 1841 headmaster in Prerau. Later he became rabbi in Kosteletz (Bohemia), 1845 Rabbi in Gaya (Moravia). He belonged to the Committee for Moravian-Jewish Affairs with Abraham Placzek and three community leaders. In 1855 he became rabbi in Waag-Neustadtl. He founded a Jewish secondary school there. He passed away there in 1897. Engraved with 3 names, the third one being Rabbi Zalman Wolf Freund. Born in Waag-Neustadtl in 1820, he later served as Rabbi of Landstrasse near Vienna untill his passing in 1905. Marked on the bottom of the tray in the center of the dedication Weight 5.8ozt.
