About the Item

Los Ballesteros 925 Sterling Silver Taxco Mexico Mayan Face Figural Brooch Pin Sterling Silver Period: 1940-1949 Date of Manufacture: Circa 1945 Dimensions: 6,5 centimeters long 5,5 centimeters depth This is an early, rare, and important Los Ballesteros sterling silver and carved turquoise brooch of exceptional quality. The pin features an intricately designed motif of a Mayan face wearing a ceremonial feather headdress. The plumed headdress and swirl-top dangle earrings contain exquisitely detailed silversmithing. The construction showcases a variety of metalworking techniques, with a level of craftsmanship that must be the work of a master artisan. The face was hand-carved from a turquoise boulder with deep, rich and beautiful colours, which perfectly complements the pre-Columbian theme. We thoroughly researched this incredible brooch, and confirmed it was produced between 1942 & 1947. The various hallmarks on the rear indicate this piece was crafted shortly after Los Ballesteros moved their workshop in 1941 from Iguala to Taxco; the famous silversmithing city in the state of Guerrero. The absence of an Eagle Mark signifies the brooch was created prior to 1948, which is the year federal law required the hallmark on all silver jewellery. The brooch is in good vintage condition, with light wear and original patina. There is a minor nibble on the turquoise in the lower lip, which is not readily apparent due to the deep colour of the turquoise - please enlarge photos for close up view. The pin and clasp are fully-functional, and the hallmarks are bright and visible. This unique and historical brooch would make a beautiful addition to the collection of any fine jewellery enthusiast and lovers of Taxco''s Mexican Modernist designs.
