About the Item
A charming set of six vintage dessert plates from Dieulefit, a small pottery-rich village nestled in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France. Dating to the 1950s, each plate is finished in a warm ochre yellow glaze with a lightly scalloped edge and a characteristic burnt brown rim—a hallmark of traditional Dieulefit pottery.
Pottery making in Dieulefit dates back over 2,000 years, flourishing during the due to the area's abundant refractory clay, pristine Rhône valley water, and surrounding forests. This rich natural environment, paired with the unique Provençal light and landscape, has long drawn artists and artisans alike, transforming the region into a celebrated hub for French ceramics.
During the 20th century, the area's pottery evolved beyond utilitarian wares into a true art form, with an emphasis on wheel-thrown craftsmanship, hand-painted glazes, and a signature palette that includes vibrant greens and yellows. The plates in this set reflect that tradition—simultaneously rustic and refined, functional and decorative.
Today, the Dieulefit-Bourdeaux District is home to over 40 pottery and ceramic workshops, continuing to honor and innovate upon centuries old techniques. The name Dieulefit means “God made it,” but it’s the hands of many skilled artisans that shape the soulful ceramic legacy of this Provençal village. Perfect for dessert, cheese, or as display pieces, these yellowware plates bring the timeless charm and artisanal heritage of Dieulefit pottery to any table or collection.
