About the Item

This delightful 18th-century blue and white porcelain tureen was hand-painted at the Mennecy Porcelain factory in France circa 1750. Loose flower sprigs painted in cobalt blue decorate the tureen and its fixed stand. The porcelain has the creamy tone that soft paste Mennecy Porcelain is known for. The overglaze blue decoration appears to sink into the smooth, soft-paste porcelain, creating a beautiful, soft look. Dimensions: 10" long x 6" wide x 5.5" height Condition: Excellent Marks: Marked on the underside with the Mennecy factory "D/V" mark Price: $1,100 Background of Mennecy porcelain: The Mennecy Porcelain factory, one of the earliest French porcelain factories, operated from 1735 to 1773. It was located in the town of Menncy, France, about 30 kilometers southeast of Paris. Mennecy specialized in producing high-quality soft-paste porcelain. During its initial years, the Mennecy factory mainly created blue and white porcelains, often in styles similar to those of the Saint Cloud factory. The early Mennecy wares had a creamy tone, just like our tureen. Many pieces from Saint Cloud and Mennecy were decorated with cornflower sprigs, known in French as " Barbeau." Most pieces from the Mennecy factory were marked with an incised "DV" on the underside, indicating the protection of the Duc de Villeroy. French soft-paste porcelain originated from European potters' early efforts to imitate Chinese porcelain using mixtures of clay and glass frit.
