Antique Art Nouveau 1910s Punch Bowl or Champaign Cooler, Rhine Valleys Chateau

About the Item

Rare of not unique Champaign cooler or Punch bowl, attributed to Kayserzinn, Cologne, Germany. Attributed to the hands of Hugo Leven, likely a one-off order by one of the many exclusive Rhine castle hotels of the time. A classic 1900-1910 design, pure art nouveau with grape vines and strawberries. Presenting a castle on the lid, which seems to depict the chateau ''Stolzenfels''. The most astounding detail – if there is one detail less impressive than the other with this piece – is the verse that winds its way around the ''hull'' of this vessel and which goes back to Romanticism and published as a poem by H. Dippel in 1856: ''Es liegt eine Krone im tiefen Rhein, wohlauf getrunken den funkelnden Wein. ''A crown lies in the deep Rhine, well now drinking the sparkling wine.'' The green glass inner is a beautifully shaped piece, quite sturdy, engraved only with thin lines in the upper area. In the gap in between the zwo pieces of the set, there is room to fill in ice. Glass bowl dimensions: top diameter 8.66 inches (22 cm) approx., height 10.82 inches (27.5 cm) approx. Glass thickness 5 mm approx.
