About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Georgian English sterling silver wine coolers; an addition to our antique wine and drink related silverware collection. These exceptional antique George III sterling silver wine coolers have a circular rounded form onto a circular spreading foot. Each body is embellished with a bright cut engraved shield shaped coat of arms depicting in-escutcheon firstly and fourthly a bugle Horn stringed between three crescents, secondly and thirdly a boar's head. The aforementioned coat of arms is surmounted with the crests of a demi-dragon rampant, holding a battle-axe and a dragons head pierced through the neck with a spear. The upper rim of each piece is encircled with applied moulded decoration. Each antique wine cooler is fitted with an exceptional pair of cast and applied handles, each fashioned in the form of lion's masks grasping a drop-ring handle. These antique silver coolers are supported by circular spreading feet embellished with bands of tooled decoration to the lower portion. These exceptional examples of Georgian silverware retain the original, hallmarked detachable rims and liners. The cylindrical solid silver rim of each piece is encircled with a band of applied thread decoration to the upper portion. The swept surface of each rim is ornamented with the aforementioned bright cut engraved crests. The surface of each liner is plain and unembellished, apart from the featured hallmarks. The components of these exceptional antique wine coolers were made by the renowned London silversmith John Houle. Such pairs of original Georgian wine coolers are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Condition These antique silver coolers are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The cast and applied decoration is very sharp and the bright cut engraved heraldic markings are all very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the body and the detachable rim, in addition to the part hallmarks to the liner of each wine cooler are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique Georgian silverware. The surface of the upper portion of each body is plain and embellished with two large applied tied oak leaf wreath cartouches, one side bears the contemporary bright cut engraved coat of arms* depicting a pile engrailed with three cross-crosslet fitchy, all surmounted with the crest displaying a cock's head. The second cartouche on each holder bears the contemporary bright cut engraved presentation inscription 'Given to William Rigden, In Remembrance of William Galdork, by W.H.B'. These silver wine bottle holders each have an applied moulded decorated border to the flared rim. The lower bulbous portion of each wine cooler is encompassed with exceptional chased fluted decoration below an applied ribbed border. Each wine cooler is supported by a domed circular spreading foot embellished with a chased egg decorated border and a plain collet style rim. The surface of each antique tea caddy is embellished with impressive chased and embossed scrolling floral and foliate decoration, incorporating paralleling undulating borders framing each side. The decoration to the body of each incorporates two cartouches, one displaying the contemporary engraved coat of arms depicting an oval escutcheon supported by a savage and a greyhound collared and chained, displaying firstly a stag's head and secondly three bars below three roundels. The coat of arms bears the motto 'Data fata secutus' - Following the destiny allotted to me*. The surface of the cooler is embellished with exceptional chased floral and scrolling foliate decoration, all on a matte background. The decoration to the body incorporates a large scroll bordered cartouche to either side, each ornamented with a contemporary engraved coat of arms depicting firstly a chevron charged with three lions passant guardant, secondly in chief three cross-crosslet and to the base a lion passant.
