Antique 19th Century English Glazed Ceramic And Brass Fireplace Tool Rest

About the Item

This eye-catching English antique is a fireplace tool rest - a desirable and common feature in Victorian homes. As the name suggests, its purpose is to hold fireplace tools such as brushes and tongs when not in use, preventing dirt from accumulating on the floor beneath. It is uncommon to find this type of piece crafted from glazed ceramic, making it a particularly desirable antique. Crafted in the late 1800s, this piece features a pair of glazed ceramic figures shaped as griffins, which are mythical creatures with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. The griffins support a refined brass bar, which terminates in pinecone finials. Widely regarded as symbols of strength and courage, griffins were especially popular in Victorian decorative arts. During this era, there was a strong fascination with mythology, and many artists drew inspiration from the mythical world, as exemplified by this fine piece. The figures are finished with a rich dark brown glaze, a technique commonly referred to as Rockingham ware, named after the Rockingham Pottery manufactory, known for specialising in such ceramics. The materials and craftsmanship suggest that this fireplace tool rest was intended for middle- and upper-class homes, reflecting the period's desire to stay in vogue with contemporary artistic trends. Despite its age, this high quality fireplace tool rest remains both a functional and visually striking addition to modern interiors seamlessly blending utility with timeless elegance.
