About the Item
A masterful early work by famed potters Otto and Gertrud Natzler. This round-shaped footed bowl was delicately hand thrown and formed by Gertrud and glazed by Otto with one of his famed early volcanic glazes. The bowl captures your attention from all angles. Rare and stunning.
This work is sure to give aesthetic pleasure for years to come and would be an amazing addition to any Natzler or modern ceramic collection or setting.
Signed with their customary "Natzler" signature on the underside and numbered "3368" by Otto using a preliminary inventory system.
Very early work, circa 1936.
Otto Natzler was born in Vienna, Austria and immigrated with his wife Gertrud to America at the advent of WW II. They settled in Los Angeles where they began a ceramics studio. Their now well-documented collaboration lasted over thirty years until Gertrud's death in 1971. Gertrud threw the clay and formed it, while Otto glazed and fired the vessels. Their works are often distinguished by the varied glazes and surfaces. Otto, who was well known for meticulously testing each glaze, applied the glazes with great consideration of the clay form with which it is married to. Otto continued his career after his wife's passing for another 35 years until his own death at the age of 99.
The Natzler's work can be found in prestigious collections and museums throughout the world including:
