About the Item

"Bear Society Lodge" Medicine Lance. With fur-on hide wrapped handle and beaded details, feather, hair, and red stroud drops. The “Bear Cult” was an example of the mystic animal cults that were numerous among the tribes of the Great Plains. Each of these groups within the tribe were composed of individuals who believed they had obtained supernatural powers or medicine from this animal in their “visions.” The Bear Society evolved with a distinctive set of rituals and dance regalia associated with the Grizzly Bear from which their power was derived. Bear Symbols are represented on the lance with bear claws and effigies signifying the lance owners' association with the Bear Medicine Society Lodge. Each of the lodge members had unique and elaborated effigies and symbols that pertained to his visions and encounters with the Great Bear.
