About the Item
Okiee Hashimoto (1899-1993) Stone and Sand Garden Woodcut print. c. 1961, Embossed signature, and signed, dated and numbered 46/50.
In Hashimoto’s prolific career in printmaking, he was known for an innovative use of simplified and decorative forms that exude a modern feel. He was interested in expressing the effects of light as much as carefully controlled geometry in composition and forms. Although Hashimoto portrayed diverse subjects, including flowers and figures in his late years, he preferred to work on Japanese architectures and gardens, partly in order to memorialize rapidly disappearing castles.

Okiie Hashimoto
Okiie Hashimoto was born on October 4, 1899, in Japan. He pursued a classical study of art and painting for four years, graduating in 1923 from the College of Art in Tokyo. Then, Hashimoto continued his studies under Itaru Tanabe and Shodo Hirata. His artistic style emerged decisively after having met the renowned woodcut artist Unichi Hiratsuka. He had attended Hiratsuka's courses and was later accepted into his circle of artists, the Yoyogi-ha. Through this group, he developed a lifelong friendship with Hiratsuka.
