Kiyoshi Saito Signed Japanese Woodblock Print Ikarugano-Sato Horyu-Ji Nara A
About the Item
A beautifully designed and composed woodblock print by famed Japanese printmaker Kiyoshi Saito. Many consider Saito to be one of the most important, if not the most important, contemporary Japanese printmakers of the 20th century. This print, which is titled "Ikarugano-Sato Horyu-Ji Nara (A)", features strong colors, bold wood grain (with strong elongated shadows cast on the ground and houses), and an intricate balanced, complex design. A man walks up a narrow village alleyway while a woman can be seen in her open doorway. Ikaruga is a historic town in Nara Prefecture (not far from Kyoto) where the famed Horyuji and Hokiji temples are located
The limited edition print is signed in black ink and stamped/sealed in red within the image, titled, dated (1962), and numbered (81/200) in pencil by the artist in the lower margin.
A relatively rare and hard-to-find work early work by Saito. Would be a great addition to any modern Japanese or Asian print collection or eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork in about any setting.
