Large Hooked Rug with a Seated Cat, ca 1880-1910

About the Item

LARGE HOOKED RUG WITH A SEATED CAT AS THE HOME SQUARE OF A DESIGN STYLED AFTER A PARCHEESI GAME BOARD, WITH STAR-LIKE, 6-PETAL FLOWERS IN EACH CORNER; WOOL & COTTON ON BURLAP, PROBABLY PENNSYLVANIA, MENNONITE, circa 1880-1910 Early, hooked, American rug, executed on burlap and of a generous scale, found in Pennsylvania. Made circa 1880-1910, the scrap fabrics, industriously employed, include salmon, red, black, navy, and grey woolen fabrics, brown & pink, knit wool suiting, and black, jersey stocking fabric with a deep grain, probably made of merino wool, laid over a structure of white cotton or linen thread. Also included are several cottons, including pink and brown or black polka-dot, pink and blue plaids, and a blue chambray (denim-like fabric). Probably of Mennonite origin, the graphics of the rug are very unusual, patterned after a parcheesi game board, with a beige, seated cat on the home square and star-like flowers in each corner, with six elongated petals. Both the cat and color of the background are suggestive of warmth, with the red probably selected to represent ‘fire-in-the-hearth,’ a feature typical of Pennsylvania, Mennonite, log cabin quilts, the stacked, lineal designs of which bear keen similarity. Mounting: The rug was professionally stitch-mounted on 100% cotton twill, black in color, that has been washed and treated for colorfastness. A custom, wooden framework was created for support, and the background fabric was wrapped around it, so that there is an overall depth of approximately 1.5” - 1.75” with the rug. This is deeper than usual and results in a more pronounced presentation. Condition: The overall condition is excellent and the rug presents beautifully. Fraying, wear, and fading of the fabrics were likely present when the rug was constructed.

Commission Pennant with 13 Stars, like for Private Vessel, Ca 1892-1910
Located in York County, PA
Commission pennants are the distinguishing mark of a commissioned U.S. Navy ship. Flown at the topmast, the typical American format is a long blue field, usually with a single row of white stars, although sometimes with their total divided into two rows, followed by two long stripes, red-over-white. A ship became commissioned when this pennant was hoisted. Flown during both times of peace and war, the only time the pennant is not flown is if a flag officer or civilian official was aboard and replaced it with their own flag. Sometimes the owners of private ships mimicked the use of Navy signals. Some seafaring men would have served in the Navy and become privy to various practices in that capacity. Others flew them purely for stylistic reasons, either on a regular basis or while the boat was dressed for special occasion. Hudson River steamers regularly flew pennants of this nature, as evidenced by period photography as well as the paintings of artists such as John and James Bard...
