Hooked Rug, American, Early 20th Century – Size: 9 ft 6 in x 11 ft 7 in (2.9 m x 3.53 m) This sophisticated vintage American rug features a handsome allover pattern that incorporates a rich variety of monochromatic and variegated stripes arranged in staggered rows. The polychromatic field is further divided into a triad of distinct compartments that create a graphic stripe-within-a-stripe pattern. Each narrow segmented stripe is set against a variety of contrasting colors that create a harmonious low-key pattern comprised of varied hues. Vintage American hand hooked rug in a stripe pattern handcrafted in the 1st quarter of the 1900s. The hooked rugs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are made with recycled old material, often used clothing that had been cut into narrow stripes. The foundation of hooked rugs is generally burlap material which the maker uses the stenciling technique to transfer the pattern into the surface. Once the design has been transferred to burlap, it would then be filled with the recycled material stripes and more recently yarn using the hooking technique.
