About the Item

An expressive hand-carved wooden corpus of Christ from 18th century Bohemia, originally mounted on a wooden cross for devotional use. Executed in the late Baroque style, the figure shows finely rendered anatomy, a dynamic posture, and remnants of the original polychrome finish with subtle traces of red pigments at the wounds. The sculpture retains remarkable character and surface patina, telling the story of centuries of veneration. Visible losses include the missing ends of both hands and parts of the arms, consistent with age and the removal from its original cross. Despite these areas of wear, the figure remains structurally sound and visually powerful. This piece once formed the central element of a chapel or private altar. Today, it stands as an evocative object for display in historical interiors, devotional settings, or as a striking statement piece in a contemporary space.
