About the Item

Offered is a wonderful metal art sculpture / coffee / cocktail table by well known Rochester NY sculpture Carl Zollo (1928-2009).Born November 10, 1928, Carl Zollo was a native Rochestarian and the son of Italian immigrants. A graduate of RIT, he worked in professional theater and became art director for TV Channel 8. After taking evening classes at the Memorial Art Gallery he was invited to learn welding as a sculpturing tool. Carl explored this medium as a vehicle for the design credo that permeated his metal work, dramatic design that must picque attention from a distance. An example is the 8,000 pound sculpture at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.He has works in numerous public buildings including the Rochester Art Gallery, Strasenburgh Planetarium, Eastman Kodak Company, Pfaudler Company, the Gannett Foundation, and Nazareth College, including the Casa Italiana. ^^^^^^Zolo's most notable work "SPLIT CUBE" sits outside Rochester Institute of Technology... He was the force behind Festeggiamo Le Arti, a biennial exhibit of works of art by Italian-American artists in the Rochester area. An active volunteer with the American Red Cross, he worked for many years on the annual Fire and Ice fund raising event. A founding member of Blackfriars, he helped design sets for the local theater group as well as the Memorial Art Gallery, the George Eastman House, and the Strasenburgh Planetarium. He also served as Art Director for three motion pictures films.In 1988, Arts For Greater Rochester honored him as Individual of the Year for his life-long contribution to art, calling him Rochester's Treasure. The Sons of Italy honored him in 1990 with the Artist of the Year Award and in 1991 he received the Rochester Chamber of Commerce's Culture and Arts Award.
