Early 20th Century American "Chiropractor" Sign

About the Item

Own a piece of Wisconsin's history with this early 20th century hand-painted sign from an early 20th-century chiropractor's office. The sign, found in a barn in the heart of Wisconsin, features a classic black background adorned with bold, radiant yellow letters spelling out "CHIROPRACTOR." This panel was part of larger sign, presumably naming the practitioner, but we found it as is. Dating back to the era around the historic case of "State of Wisconsin vs. Shearer" in 1907, this sign holds even greater historical importance. During the trial, the defendant, a chiropractor named Shearer, faced charges for practicing medicine without a license. The favorable outcome of the case contributed to the recognition of chiropractic as a legitimate healthcare profession in Wisconsin and for the first time in the United States. This handcrafted relic stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of chiropractic's impact on Wisconsin's history, serving as a timeless symbol of healing and hope for generations past and present.

A captivating and intriguing early 20th century Southern American folk art panel, found in Mississippi, depicting a figure with what appears to be African tribal headgear, and wearing a white collared shirt with black suit jacket. The line work and attention to detail is extraordinary and mysterious, with the artist choosing to incorporate a natural knot in the board to form the mouth of the figure, and the left half of the drawing showing shading, but seemingly left unfinished. The frame is not terribly old, and is constructed from splatter-painted boards...
