1940's - 1950's Pare Maternity Figure, Tanzania

About the Item

This finely carved mid-twentieth century figurative sculpture, from the Pare culture in Tanzania, depicts a female with large, prominent ears. Standing in a proud, upright stance, she gently rests her hands on her stomach. This wooden figure features a cavity located at the top of the head. Used during rituals to empower the figure, this cavity served to give protection and good health.
