About the Item

Antique Japanese Recycled Boro Patchwork Futon Cover This indigo-dyed patchwork boro futon cover is a physical testimony to the determination and resourcefulness of those living in rural Japan during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Cotton was highly valued due to its warmth and texture, and every effort was made to save and repurpose scraps for clothing, bedding, and other practical uses. This example is the back (or inside) of the original futon cover, where the patches were stitched down with sashiko stitching to preserve the opposite (front) side. Width: 31.25 inches, Height: 55 inches, late 19th century.
