About the Item
Dan carved wood prestige spoon or ladle, from the Dan people of Ivory Coast, West Africa. Spoons like this were used by the most prominent woman in the village as a sign of her power and generosity, it was used to distribute food. Strong carved face with traces of white in eyes.
Incised geometric pattern on back of bowl.
It is in good condition, appropriate for its age, use, and medium. Scuffs and nicks here and there along with deep patina and signs of wear from traditional use.
Early to mid 20th century,
From the estate of a former Firestone Tire Manager who lived and worked at the Firestone Plantation in Liberia, at the same time as Dr George Harley, possibly field collected by him.
22 3/8 inches high, on custom metal stand 24 1/2 inches high.
