About the Item

Dan carved wood prestige spoon or ladle, from the Dan people of Ivory Coast, West Africa. Spoons like this were used by the most prominent woman in the village as a sign of her power and generosity, it was used to distribute food. Incised geometric pattern on back of bowl. Rare style with two carved legs and the bowl becoming the body to complete a stylized figure. It is in good condition, appropriate for its age, use, and medium. Scuffs and nicks here and there along with signs of wear from traditional use. Early to mid 20th century, ex NYC gallery on Madison Ave., acquired before 1991, 18 1/2" high, on custom metal stand 19 inches high.
