Early 20th Century Female Figure. Lwena/Chokwe, Angola-Zambia

About the Item

This early twentieth-century figurative sculpture, from the Lwena/Chokwe culture in the Angola-Zambia Border Region, depicts a female standing in an upright stance. A defining characteristic of this piece is the position of the female's arms, which are clasped behind her back. Brass tacks and small cross-shaped markings adorn the figure's face, and a pattern of finely engraved lines feature on her carved coiffure.
