About the Item
A rare and beautifully aged Lobi tribal chair from Burkina Faso, dating to the early 1900s. Hand-carved from a single piece of hardwood, this sculptural piece reflects the refined minimalism and quiet strength of West African tribal design.
The chair features a gently curved seat supported by two conical legs, with a gracefully arched handle or backrest extending from the rear — a distinctive and highly sought-after Lobi design element. The surface bears a rich, timeworn patina, with visible wear and subtle cracks that speak to its authentic use and age.
Traditionally used by Lobi elders or men of status, such stools were personal possessions imbued with spiritual and ancestral significance. They are rarely shared and often accompanied their owners into burial, making well-preserved examples exceptionally rare.
This piece stands out not only as a functional object but also as a museum-quality sculptural form, echoing the aesthetics that inspired early 20th-century modernist masters.
