About the Item

Early Ibibio standing carved wood male figure, powerful expression with hands on sides of stomach, exposed teeth and vertical raised scarification marks on sides of face. From a shrine with heavy remains of encrusted offerings, weathering and erosion. Stable cracks, and front of proper right foot missing. From Nigeria, Africa. Old label on base from a previous collection mentions this figure being part of a pair, the whereabouts of the other figure is unknown. 16 1/4 inches high on custom metal base (wear and chips to metal base) Created mid 20th century or earlier. From Washington collection, previously Slatter and Hallet collections.
