About the Item

Luba Caryatid Stool – Upemba Region, D.R. Congo Late 19th century to 1900 Wood lightweight, rich patina Height: 50 cm, diameter top 29 x 27.5 cm Provenance: Danish colonial collection circa 1900 - Pierre Loos, Brussels This elegant caryatid stool is a classical example of Luba court sculpture from the Upemba region in southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Carved from a finely grained, lightweight wood, the stool is supported by a kneeling female figure—a motif central to Luba cosmology, symbolizing ancestral wisdom, maternal lineage, and the spiritual support of royal authority. The figure displays a poised, introspective demeanor, with finely carved facial features, a traditional Luba coiffure, and geometric scarification across the torso. These details speak to the high level of craftsmanship and the symbolic importance of the figure, likely representing a spirit intermediary or ancestral protector. The posture—kneeling with arms raised to support the seat—reflects the ideal of female strength and continuity in Luba belief systems. Stools of this kind were used not as furniture but as emblems of sacred and political power, often reserved for the king (mulopwe), diviners, or other dignitaries. Their portability allowed them to accompany rulers in ceremony and ritual. This example bears signs of ritual handling, with a warm, tactile patina from age and use. Formerly in the collection of Pierre Loos, a renowned Belgian dealer and connoisseur of Central African art, this piece offers both aesthetic excellence and distinguished provenance. Condition Excellent condition with age-consistent wear. Minor surface abrasions and a soft patina testify to its ritual use and authenticity. Note to Buyer A highly collectible example of classic Luba sculptural tradition with outstanding provenance. Suitable for inclusion in both private and institutional collections.
