About the Item

Luba Female Figure (Kalundwe Style), Democratic Republic of Congo, Early 20th Century Height: 29 cm (11.4 in) Material: Wood, with rich patina of age Provenance: Ex-collection Alain Guisson, Belgium An elegant and finely-carved female figure from the Luba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, attributed to the Kalundwe stylistic tradition. This early 20th-century sculpture presents all the hallmarks of Kalundwe artistry: a slender, harmonious form, elaborate coiffure with finely incised detail, scarification patterns across the abdomen, and a serene, introspective facial expression. Figures of this scale (29 cm) were often created for private devotional use, family shrines, or as part of diviners' ritual practice. The scarifications, hairstyle, and pose reflect ideals of Luba beauty, feminine power, and fertility — central themes in Luba spiritual and social life. The figure comes from the noted collection of Alain Guisson, a respected Belgian dealer and collector of African art, adding depth and value to its provenance. In excellent condition with beautiful surface patina, this is a highly collectible example of Luba artistry. A rare opportunity to acquire an authentic early 20th-century Luba figure of refined style and distinguished provenance. Mounted on a custom made wooden base, total heigth 34.2 cm, heigth statue 29 cm
