About the Item

Mangbetu Female Figure Northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (former Zaire) Early to mid-20th century, likely Lang period (c. 1920–1945) Hardwood Height: 45 cm Provenance: Private European collection, possibly linked to missionary acquisitions from the Lang period. A finely carved Mangbetu female figure of classic form, rendered in dense hardwood and standing 45 cm tall. The figure features a high, elongated coiffure — a signature Mangbetu trait referencing elite cranial deformation — and delicately incised scarification patterns across the face and torso. Her arms are positioned behind the back in a stylized posture, suggesting a formal aesthetic created for dignified display. The statue exhibits an elegant elongation of limbs, smooth modeling, and a calm facial expression. Perforated ears hint at symbolic adornment, and the surface retains a dry, matte patina consistent with age and long-term storage. These details point to a transitional object: deeply rooted in traditional iconography, yet likely produced during the colonial era for the European missionary or collector market. Condition consistent with age, with minor surface cracking and natural wear, especially at extremities. No restoration. A sculptural work of understated beauty and historical depth, reflecting both the Mangbetu cultural ideal and early 20th-century colonial collecting trends.
