Mid-20th Century Makonde Black Madonna, Tanzania

About the Item

This mid-twentieth century African Madonna comes from the Makonde culture, in the Matwara region of southern Tanzania. The Madonna figure exhibits a graceful, serene facial expression, with a slightly bowed head and downcast eyes. The Madonna's long robe emphasises her slender, upright form, and a carved head covering is depicted draping over her shoulders to touch the circular base that she stands on. Her arms are placed firmly at her sides, with upturned, enlarged palms. Beneath her garment, her toes are visible. As a result of handling over time, this piece has developed a beautiful worn surface patina. ‍Estimated Period: Mid-20th Century (Or Before) Height Including Custom Base: 40.5cm Width Including Custom Base: 10cm Depth Including Custom Base: 10cm
