Early Twentieth-Century African Madonna
About the Item
This early twentieth-century African Madonna figurative sculpture from the Makonde culture in southern Tanzania, close to the border of Mozambique, exhibits a wonderful sense of movement. With her head slightly tilted to the side, the Madonna stands gracefully in a counterpoise, 'contrapposto' stance, with the palms of her hands upturned by her sides. Her long, flowing robes follow the gentle twists of her posture, and she bears a beautiful serene facial expression.
Besides their religious contexts, Makonde Madonna figures such as this would have been kept in private dwellings and houses, serving as protective forces.
