Mid-Twentieth Century Tall Female Figure With Bead Decoration

About the Item

This mid-twentieth century figurative sculpture, which comes from the Kwere culture in Tanzania, depicts a female standing in an upright stance, with her hands placed by her sides. A prominent parted carved coiffure crowns her head, and throughout, the figure exhibits refined, delicate proportions. Strands of early glass beads - mainly white beads, representing purity - decorate the figure's waist. The surface of the piece is very smooth, and shows a slightly worn patina where the figure has been touched and handled over time.
