About the Item
Rare Antique Japanese Oversized Sleeping Kimono (Yogi)
This is the outer shell of a type of shaped sleeping kimono known as a yogi. Yogi were in more common use during the Edo and Meiji periods, but their use seems to have died out after the early 1900s. This example is made of linen (asa) and is patterned with a hand-applied paste resist-method of dyeing called ‘tsutsugaki’. The motifs includes a large crest in the upper center of the back, with waves crashing at the bottom and small plover birds (chidori) in flight. Originally, it would have been backed throughout and stuffed with cotton wadding, essentially a type of thick wearable futon, providing warmth during Japan’s cold winter months. A classic folk art (mingei) item from old Japan.
