About the Item
Rare Antique Woman's Silk Ceremonial Headscarf (Kiet), Cambodia
This traditional head cloth or veil was made by the Cham people of Cambodia, a Muslim group with historic ties to Malay culture. Woven of imported Chinese silk, the central field displays a diamond lattice pattern composed of rows of multi-colored squares, stars and small roundels, all achieved using tie and stitch-resist methods. The layout of the textile reflects a patola format, with the triangular form (tumpal) in the end panels rendered in the unique Cham motif of sprouting bamboo shoots. This particular type of kiet has clear similarities to the plangi textiles of Palembang, south Sumatra, a reflection of the shared cultural history and centuries of trade between the Cham communities of Indo-China and the Malay world.
