Pair of Monumental Topoke African Currency Spears on Museum Stands, Late 19th C.
Located in San Francisco, CA
An impressive pair of late 19th century extra-long African currency spears—properly referred to as liganda or ngbele —from the Topoke, Turumbu, or Lokele peoples and related cultures in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, presented on museum-caliber custom made black pedestal display stands. A liganda’s monetary value was determined primarily by its length, and based on the monumental size of the pair offered here, they would’ve been classified as dihunga liganda—the largest of those made—and used for important events or transactions such as wedding dowries or the purchase of livestock or a canoe. Each dihunga liganda is comprised of two hand-forged, hand-wrought, and hand-worked thin melded iron pieces that in whole form a sword-like spear with winged elements that smoothly transition to a blade terminating in an elongated tip. Middle ridge with parallel linear decorations on both sides follow the left edge of the blade and the perimeter of the wings. Narrow cylindrical shaft at bottom would’ve originally allowed it to be mounted on a pole or planted in the ground. Both dihunga liganda display a very handsome and desirable amount of uniform natural patina and character throughout. Created and exchanged by the Turumbu originally, as well as by the Topoke, Lokele, Bambole, Wagenia, and Bajurnu peoples of the Isangi, Kisangani, Lomami, Lualaba, and other nearby regions of central Africa until around 1920, at which point the use of liganda as currency was banned by the Belgian colonial powers in control at the time. Presented on commanding museum-quality custom made matte black wood pedestal display...

19th Century Plains Crow Native American Beaded Hide Blanket Strip
Located in Denver, CO
This antique 19th-century Crow beaded blanket strip is a stunning example of Plains Indian craftsmanship. Constructed from native tanned hide and adorned with glass trade beads and red stroud cloth (trade cloth), this piece features intricate beadwork in light blue, yellow, red, dark blue, and white beads arranged in geometric and bar designs. The strip is divided into four rectangular segments, with each segment separated by three round rosettes. Each rosette is beautifully beaded in pink, light blue, yellow, dark blue, and white beads, with hide suspensions in the center, adding both texture and movement to this decorative piece. The Crow people (Apsáalooke), meaning "Children of the Large Beaked Bird," are part of the Northern Plains Indian culture group. Historically, they lived in areas of present-day Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota. The Great Plains region spans from southern Canada to the southern United States, covering modern states like Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. This beaded blanket strip is a rare and exceptional example of Crow Native American art...

Ethiopian Procession Cross: A Sacred Heritage and Craftsmanship
Located in Ixelles, BE
Ethiopian Procession Cross: A Sacred Heritage and Craftsmanship. Structure and Composition: This finely crafted Ethiopian procession cross is rich in iconographic detail. Constructed from metal, likely bronze or brass, it features a complex structure with several decorative elements. - Central Part: • Madonna and Child: At the heart of the cross is a depiction of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. This central image is framed within a circle adorned with openwork motifs and small inlays that appear to be precious stones or colored glass pieces. Arms of the Cross: • Angelic Musicians: Each lateral arm of the cross features an angelic musician, playing instruments and depicted in a flying position. The angels are finely detailed, with spread wings and carefully sculpted garments. • Cherub: At the apex of the cross, a cherub is depicted, a celestial being with multiple wings and surrounded by cloud-like motifs. • Bird Motifs: The lower extremities of the cross are adorned with bird motifs, likely doves, symbolizing peace and the Holy Spirit, placed within openwork circles. Base and Handle: • Engraved Base: The base of the cross, which serves as a handle, is also richly engraved with floral and geometric motifs, providing a sturdy and decorative grip for processions. History of Ethiopian Procession Crosses Origins and Evolution: Ethiopian procession crosses have a long history, dating back to the introduction of Christianity to Ethiopia in the 4th century under King Ezana. Influenced by Coptic and Byzantine traditions, these crosses evolved to adopt a distinctive style unique to Ethiopia. - Characteristics: • Style and Iconography: Ethiopian crosses...
