Description
An exceptional early 20th-century Senufo seated female figure, masterfully hand-carved from a single block of wood and richly adorned with traditional symbols of fertility, protection, and ancestral reverence.
The sculpture features:
A helmet-style coiffure with a pronounced medial ridge
Finely carved scarification marks and an elongated torso
Conical breasts and calm, stylized facial features, exuding dignity and maternal strength
Adornments of cowrie shells, wooden beads, and fiber bands around the neck and hips
Its deep, aged patina and visible ritual wear attest to both authenticity and ceremonial use, likely in the context of fertility rites, ancestral veneration, or the Poro society—a central spiritual institution in Senufo culture.
This piece is an outstanding example of traditional West African artistry, balancing abstract elegance with profound cultural symbolism.
